STATUS: Completed
A complete renovation of a 1920s apartment in Barcelona, next to Passeig Sant Joan. The project introduces natural light, connects the gallery with a patio conceived as an urban oasis, and adopts an open layout, combining original hydraulic tiles, moldings, and woodwork with new microcement finishes.
DESCRIPTION
Located on the green axis of the Sant Joan promenade, next to one of Barcelona’s most celebrated and important architectural elements, the Arc de Triomf, and within the urban fabric created by Ildefons Cerdà, we find the complete renovation of a house with an initial construction date of 1920.
The aim of this renovation is to bring natural light into the main rooms through an interior-exterior space that acts as a filter: the gallery, a traditional element of L’Eixample architecture, connected to the home’s green space, the patio. This exterior patio is intended to create an oasis amidst the chaos of the city; a place to escape and enjoy the outdoors. This space is accessible from the entrance to the home, guiding the flow of movement to the living areas, which are bathed in more light.
The new layout follows an open-plan concept to adapt to contemporary lifestyles in Barcelona. The design highlights existing architectural elements of great value, representing tradition, such as the original hydraulic tile flooring, the moldings of the false ceilings, the glazed doors, and the natural wood windows and shutters. This contrasts with the incorporation of modern elements and materials, such as microcement, used as a neutral compositional element that does not overshadow the restored original flooring.
