Comprehensive reform
in Ataülf

The project involves the renovation of an apartment located in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, in a late 19th-century building with a single floor plan divided into two distinct areas: interconnected rooms facing the street, and a series of spaces surrounding an interior courtyard. The intervention begins with the complete gutting of the apartment, creating a central area around which the other spaces open, thus improving communication between them and increasing the visual connections throughout the apartment.

The central space accommodates the kitchen, dining room, and entrance, but it does so through a ceramic lattice screen that separates the entrance area from the dining room; and another volume, also ceramic, that houses the kitchen. This strategy allows for these three distinct functions without sacrificing the idea of a single, unified space.

The central space, previously very compartmentalized, featured a disparate and inconsistent variety of hydraulic tile flooring. We decided to restore these tiles in the perimeter areas where the flooring was in poor condition, and replace the hydraulic tile flooring in the central space with a wooden floor that would unify the entire space and highlight and enhance the two new ceramic elements that organize the space (the flat surface – partition, and the volume – kitchen).

In the rest of the house, however, we preserved the hydraulic floors, as well as the original wooden joinery, which were in good condition and preserved the character and memory of the neighborhood where they are located.
