Complete renovation of a penthouse apartment on Villarroel Street. A reflection of good ideas
This project by OAK involves the complete renovation of a penthouse apartment on Villarroel Street , in the heart of Barcelona’s Eixample district , for a couple with a daughter. The program was clear: to create a spacious living-dining room , as they enjoy cooking and entertaining friends around the table, and two bedrooms —theirs with a large wardrobe and their daughter’s with a study. If possible, they also wanted another study for themselves, although they felt that given the apartment ‘s limited size, they might have to forgo it.
This was the proposal designed by Mar Marcos, perfectly fulfilling all the client’s requirements. The main idea arose from drawing an imaginary line between the daytime and nighttime areas. 
The family was completely satisfied with the results, executed by the OAK team. The living room, parallel to the terrace and taking advantage of its entire length, as well as the natural light, meets all the requirements and, even with the added difficulty of having a pillar in the center, a table for 10 people was successfully placed, connecting a spacious kitchen and a sitting area with two sofas.
The star of this penthouse is undoubtedly a custom-designed and built MDF partition: on the living room side, it serves as a bench and bookcase, and on the bedroom side, as a desk with tall cabinets. It also features a slot for a sliding door that divides the study area in two, creating two separate desks, just as the clients requested. The side facing the daughter’s room is painted with a chalkboard finish. The central section of this partition is a fixed glass panel that allows light to filter into both the bedroom and the study. 
Indirect lighting was also a recurring theme in this comprehensive renovation. False ceilings, such as the one in the kitchen, are used, suspended to conceal LED strips, recessed designer lights, and surface-mounted fixtures. 
A large wardrobe and a wooden headboard with built-in bedside tables, all custom-made, add a touch of warmth to the most intimate area of the house.
The living area has two French doors leading to the terrace, which was 30cm higher than the interior flooring. To conceal the tracks for the French doors and create a seamless transition between the interior and exterior flooring, we built a perimeter unit in pine wood. In the living area, this unit functions as a low bench, and in the dining area, as a bench with storage . It also conceals one of the radiators.
