Renovation of a 100 m² apartment for a large family
Comprehensive reform
The challenge of designing a floor down to the millimeter
A complete renovation allows for the total transformation of a space, adapting it to a new way of living and inhabiting it: creating new circulation patterns, relationships between rooms, and a new atmosphere. It’s an opportunity to personalize the home down to the last detail and fulfill the list of needs proposed by the clients. This was the case of the complete renovation of a 100 m² apartment located in the Eixample district, which was commissioned by a family of a couple with three small children.
Project launch
The design phase was essential, during which we worked closely with the client to meet their needs. Their requirements, in addition to the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, included concepts such as ample storage, versatile room layouts, and a central space for family gatherings.
We started with a long, narrow, and very compartmentalized apartment, where we relocated the kitchen, opening it up to the living room and making it the central hub of the home. By carefully planning each module, we created a kitchen where the father can prepare dinner while the children do crafts at the large dining table and the mother works remotely at the side table. This also reduced a long, dark hallway by almost half, and with a well-executed lighting design, it has been radically transformed.
Solving needs
Although the three children initially planned to sleep together, the clients envisioned each having their own separate space in the future. Therefore, we created three generously sized bedrooms, one for each child, two of them symmetrical and designed for the two older daughters, connected by a double door. Design decisions like these foster positive relationships among the family members and create interesting flows through the spaces.
Double room
And after thinking about the needs of the children, we also wanted to pay attention to the master bedroom, incorporating a large dressing room with two sliding glass doors for entry.
Storage
Storage was another key element of this home’s design. A large mezzanine runs the length of the hallway, and custom-designed furniture makes the most of every corner. It’s an apartment designed and optimized down to the millimeter.
Colors and textures
In terms of colors and textures, the clients were very clear that they wanted to create a pleasant, warm, and timeless feel. A palette of light tones, textile-textured wall coverings, and indirect lighting effects were key to realizing this idea.
The final result reflects all the work done to meet all these needs, and there is nothing that makes us happier than the satisfaction of our clients when we deliver a finished apartment.
