Rehabilitation project of an old chocolate factory. A very unique space that architects Ana & Eugeni Bach transformed to adapt it as a home for a family.

“It is a structure with a load-bearing stone facade containing three floors, each open-plan, with a floor slab constructed using a different technique. The ground floor slab is made with a metal structure and Catalan vault, the first floor slab consists of a main structure of metal beams and a beautifully crafted framework of wooden joists, and the roof is made with large wooden beams and a brick floor finished with ceramic tiles.”

The project involves adapting this formerly industrial space into a studio and residence for a family who appreciate the character of the original building. To this end, the project proposes a solution that allows for the preservation of the original open spaces, introducing subtle modifications and solutions to maintain views of the three roofs even though the new layout requires smaller rooms.

The original staircase has been preserved, and a new one has been added at the other end of the building, allowing for flexible and multifaceted use of both the common and private spaces. In this way, different family members can enjoy a part of the house with a good level of privacy and independence.

Taking into account the fantastic Mediterranean climate of the Empordà region, the outdoor spaces have been adapted to their new use, with a small pool in the center of the courtyard around which the ground floor living room, the new porch/kitchen/dining area, and the first-floor terrace are arranged. A new exterior staircase has been placed on this porch, allowing the flexibility of the interior to extend to the use of the outdoor spaces.
